Scalp Massages for Hair Growth: Myth or Reality

I remember very vividly when, as a child, I would dream about having long hair…and I don’t mean daydreaming. Only in my dreams would my 4c hair ever be long, shiny and bouncy.

Well, 30 something years later, I know that it’s not impossible for textured hair (kinky, coily or curly hair) to be long and healthy, but what role do scalp massages play in hair growth, if any?

What Is a Scalp Massage?

A scalp massage consists in the gentle kneading, rubbing, or pressing of the scalp with the fingertips or specialized tools. The main goal is to stimulate blood circulation, relax the scalp muscles, and ultimately enhance overall scalp health. Scalp massages can be performed with or without oils and are often incorporated into hair care routines to promote relaxation and support hair growth.

Do Scalp Massages Promote Hair Growth?

There is limited direct scientific evidence specifically linking scalp massages to a more accelerated rhythm of hair growth. Most studies, like the ones published in ePlasty (2016) and Dermatology and Therapy (2019), focus on the benefits of improved hair thickness and scalp health rather than the speed of hair growth.

While increased blood circulation and follicle stimulation from scalp massages can promote a healthy environment for hair growth, evidence directly supporting a higher rate of hair growth due to scalp massages is not robust. Most feedback comes from anecdotal reports and community experiences, particularly in the natural hair care community, where improvements in hair health and manageability have been noticed.

What are the benefits of scalp massages?

  1. Improves Blood Circulation

Scalp massages stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients essential for hair growth.

  2. Relieves Scalp Tension

Tight hairstyles, common in protective styling, can create tension on the scalp. Massages help relax the tight areas and reduce the discomfort.

  3. Enhances Moisture Absorption

Textured hair often struggles with dryness. Scalp massages, especially with oils, improve product penetration, keeping your scalp nourished and preventing flakes.

  4. Promotes Hair Growth

If your goal is to retain length, scalp massagens may help by boosting blood flow and reducing follicle blockages, which ultimately stimulate new hair growth.

  5. Prevents Build-Up

Coily, kinky and curly hair is prone to product accumulation. Scalp massages may help break up and remove build-up.

How to Give Your Scalp the Best Massage

Step 1: Choose the Right Oil

The inclusion of oils in scalp massages isn’t necessarily mandatory, but some oils are known for their benefits for the hair and scalp health, so they can be a nice addition to the massages:

  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil: famous for stimulating growth.

  • Peppermint Oil: provides a tingling sensation and boosts circulation.

  • Tea Tree Oil: known for reducing itchiness and flakiness.

  • Coconut Oil: has moisturizing properties for the scalp.

Pro Tip: always mix essential oils like peppermint or tea tree with a carrier oil to avoid irritation. Carrier oils, such as coconut, jojoba, or argan oil, dilute the essential oils, making them safe for direct application on the scalp.

Step 2: Position Matters

  • Head ppright: best for quick massages.

  • Head down (inversion method): best for increasing blood flow to the scalp. Limit this method to 4-5 minutes each time to prevent dizziness.

Step 3: Frequency

To achieve the best results, aim for 2-3 scalp massage sessions per week. Each session should last about 5-10 minutes.

Step 4: Techniques

  • Use the pads of your fingers to gently massage your scalp in circular motions.

  • Focus on areas prone to dryness or tension, like the edges and the crown.

  • Avoid using your nails to prevent irritation.

Tools to Elevate Your Scalp Massage Routine

  1. Scalp massager brushes: silicone brushes are gentle on the scalp and can also be used in the shower to distribute shampoo evenly while massaging the scalp.

  2. Electric scalp massagers: for a hands-free option, you can invest in an electric scalp massager. These devices mimic finger motions and are perfect for deep relaxation.

  3. Hot oil treatment caps: combine massages with heat for maximum oil penetration. Heated caps enhance the effectiveness of nourishing oils.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating scalp massages into your textured hair routine is a small yet impactful way to promote healthy growth, reduce dryness, and maintain a thriving crown. With the right oils, tools, and techniques, your natural hair journey can be even more rewarding.
